Weather and Best Time to Visit Vilcabamba

Vilcabamba’s Perfect Climate
The weather in Vilcabamba Ecuador is like nature’s version of a perfectly set thermostat. Imagine waking up every day to temperatures that hover delightfully in the 70 to 85 degree Fahrenheit range. Vilcabamba Ecuador has two seasons. A rainy season running approximately from October thru March and a dry season running April thru September. El Niño and La Niña can also have an impact on the seasons here.
During the rainy season you will see the rivers running at much higher levels and with more force, sometimes limiting ones bathing experience in the river to when it hasn’t rained in a couple of days. This experience, according to locals, is one of the reasons people enjoy a much longer life. The rivers swell from rain that flows from Podocarpus National Park full of minerals and nutrients that the body craves. During this season, you can expect to see enough rainfall to keep the lush landscapes thriving but not so much that you’re reaching for an umbrella every time you step outside.
Vilcabamba’s ideal weather attracts all kinds of adventure-seekers who crave outdoor activities without fearing harsh weather. In Vilcabamba, the showers guarantee that rivers meander, waterfalls tumble, and greenery thrives (at least in the wet season), transforming it into an idyllic haven for enthusiasts of the natural world. If you enjoy hiking, bird watching, horseback riding or just sitting around in the town square talking to someone you just met, you won’t be disappointed. During the dry season, the hillsides migrate to a straw colored look due to the lack of rain and increasing amount of wind.
Several reforestation initiatives are underway to replenish the hillsides with any number of trees possible. The intention is to take it back to a time before deforestation was encouraged to where the trees, flora and fauna, were more revered as they were in ancient times. From air quality to retaining moisture in the hillsides, the eco system that once was and thrived here is slowly making a comeback.
Eco-Resort Izhcayluma is one perfect example, where the owners have committed to replacing what once was pastureland to a now vibrant and extensive collection of flora and fauna. It is thankless work and you don’t see results for many years, and then one day, you notice the sheer amount of wildlife that now occupies your slice of paradise, so you know whatever you have done is working.
So what does this mean on a daily basis. You can forget about checking your weather app each morning because here, it’s almost always going to be a beautiful day. During the rainy season, you’re definitely going to experience a little more rain than in the dry season, however the fantastic climate here offers both locals and tourists the luxury of organizing their activities with confidence. Whether it’s hiking alongside the rivers or walking around checking out the fresh produce at the local market, it is almost guaranteed that the weather will be somewhere between 70 and 85.

The 40 hectare nature reserve provides accessible hiking opportunities that cater to varying levels of outdoor enthusiasts, making it an ideal spot for leisurely exploration and wildlife observation. Moreover, serving as both a conservation area and an educational space, Rumi Wilco fosters an environment where nature preservation meets immersive learning, offering visitors an enriching experience amidst the natural wonders of Vilcabamba.
Alicia, Orlando and their 3 children have done and continue to do a magnificent job in reforesting and identifying species that live within the reserve. They have identified 142 different species of birds and more than 700 different species of plants. They have a $2 per person donation box at one entrance whereby visitors can help with their efforts in the upkeep and conservation of this area and at the same time really enjoy some excellent hiking trails. The reserve offers a river trail and several ridge and gully trails that provide spectacular vistas of Vilcabamba.
Along the trails you will notice in many places where they have tagged and identified different kinds of species of plants and trees.

I found the gully trails to be a little more challenging than the ridge trails but both offer unforgettable scenery. The gully trails are not recommended after or during a bout of rain for obvious reasons. The landscape can be more on the challenging side and throw slippery rocks into the mix could make the event something you would rather not participate in.

Entertainment

Shanta pictured with Snake Whiskey
Yes there is a nightlife in Vilcabamba for those that crave music and bar style entertainment. Some last until the early morning hours with Friday and Saturday evenings being the busiest.
- Vilca Garden – always some form of entertainment nightly (closed Monday and Tuesday) from local and travelling musicians to Salsa Saturday. Events are posted outside the entrance. Location is in the central park. Friday and Saturday nights til 3am
- Discothèque – north east side of town not far from the Veterinarian’s office and next door to the recycling center (follow the sound of music) Friday and Saturday nights til 3am – $2 cover charge and id required.
- Izhcayluma – for those staying at Eco-Resort Izhcayluma, they have a separate bar/entertainment area for guests that is open nightly until the last person leaves. Pool table, ping pong, large screen tv for sporting events or a movie. Excellent for meeting other travellers.
- Shanta’s – just past the entrance to Vilcabamba on the north side of town – lots of vegan and vegetarian options – only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday – Not open til 3am but an excellent source of entertainment. Shanta resembles Sam Elliot and has the bar/restaurant decorated in a western theme – it’s worth going just to see the paraphernalia that adorns the walls. Shanta only speaks Spanish so to get all the stories, spruce up on your Spanish. The Snake Whiskey (picture above) is a must try for a memorable evening. Most people do not make it past 3 shots.
Where to Eat in Vilcabamba

My Top Restaurants
Below are some of the authors favourite restaurants and in no particular order. This list is nowhere near complete as the region boasts an extensive list of restaurants with international cuisines in addition to the huge number of Ecuadorian restaurants that serve up amazing dishes. Prices will vary from $2.50 to $20+ for dishes and it’s worth mentioning that a lot of restaurants are closed Monday’s and Tuesday’s.
If you’re new to the area, take a stroll around the central park and just ask individuals what and where their favourite restaurants might be. I guarantee you that you will receive a multitude of answers as the sheer number of restaurants in and around town are all deserving of mention. If you’re not prone to starting a conversation, be adventurous. Restaurant Katherine, Vilca Garden, Natural Yoghurt, Vilca Brunch, Tasty and Healthy all serve up excellent meals.
One thing to note is to have small bills or coins whenever possible. If you go to La Baguette early in the morning like I did one day for coffee and pastry, they may not be able to make change for a $20. (do you remember that Seinfeld episode of the Soup Nazi) No coffee and pastry for Mac that morning lol.
